So I was sitting in the waiting room at Massage Envy, and a man - TopicsExpress

So I was sitting in the waiting room at Massage Envy, and a man with a walker and on oxygen was being helped into the room so I got up and moved to a chair further away from the door so he could sit. There were a few other people and we got to talking about dogs. I say how its hard sometimes and I have to get someone to take mine out when Im on call and get stuck at the hospital. One by one the others got called back and it was just me and the older man. He asked if I worked at Duke and I said no, UNC. Then he asked what I do and I explained the whole transplant thing. He goes on to tell me he needs a heart/lung TX, but cant get on the waiting list because his life expectancy is less that 5 years. He starts explaining he had cancer and all the treatment is what damaged his heart and lungs. Then I get called to go back while hes explaining. I got up and stood in front of him to let him finish, by which time he had tears in his eyes. And then I did something I have never done before... I picked up his hand and held it between both of mine and said, I am so sorry, and I will pray for you. He is dying and there isnt anything anyone can do. The organ waitlist is so long and there are no where near enough organs, which is why they have to implement these rules to get on the waitlist. Please, please become an organ donor if you are not.
