So I was talking to Israel A. Durham last night about everything - TopicsExpress

So I was talking to Israel A. Durham last night about everything (LOL) but, at some point, we began talking about hymns and theological articulations of this Ferguson moment. That move in our conversation made me go back to Dr. J Kameron Carters questions at #WeCantBreatheDukeDiv (What if the protests in the streets represent the new ecclesiology? What if theology needs to catch up to Ferguson?) In my conversation with Israel, he said maybe we need new hymns. I responded: What if the protest songs/chants rising out of Ferguson ARE the new hymns? If we are in a new moment in the church, can old songs articulate it? Theres one chant I heard on livestream one night that I will never forget. Revolutionary Love Love Love! Revolutionary Love Love Love! Folks had their fist in the air, eyes closed and were swaying from side to side. Watching THAT moment, I felt the power of the Holy Ghost and in my own personal moments since, when my private faith has faltered, Ive sang that one to myself. If were in a new moment, all things will be new right? Ferguson is changing EVERYTHING.
