So I was telling Angelee that I dont care what Bob Dylan has to - TopicsExpress

So I was telling Angelee that I dont care what Bob Dylan has to say about the songs meaning (or what he doesnt say -- hes not known for explaining his stuff after all :-) ), I KNOW what the meaning of Tangled up in Blue is really about whether he knows it or not. And dont bother to argue with me, it wont matter. For me, this is what the song simply IS about. So there! (by the way, I have a vague memory that Ive posted about this before in the past, so some may recognize these ramblings.) Each verse is about various women (whether fictional or actual events in his life -- doesnt matter, this is art after all) that somehow evoke his longing for woman, and that woman is the Virgin Mary, our Mother. Yeah, yeah, I know the verses talk about romantic love of a woman and all, and the yucky feelings that the idea of Mary as Mother invokes. But at the heart of them all is our spiritual Mother, Mary, who transcends those romantic notions of love, and such. Remember that she is associated with the Church in a mysterious manner as the Bride, and Mother, and Body and Church of Christ all folded in together. So it is easy to get various fallen, and therefore separated feelings and emotions confused and mixed up in our senses. In any case, however that all works out (and I dont really want to even try to analyze that messy conglomeration of meanings), the clincher for me (and yes, I realize it is only a personal preference, but I like it -- again, so there!) is that blue is the color associated with Mary, and the title of the song Tangled Up in Blue almost perfectly evokes the meaning Ive described above -- ie, as a line in the last verse says, all the people we used to know, theyre an illusion to me now. All the verses about various women are illusions and are actually more like pointers to Mary, who is the Blue that in all those earthly visions he is tangled up in. As that last verse begins So now Im goin back again, I got to get to her somehow... (and of course, as a side point, it doesnt hurt my enjoyment that it is perhaps the only song I know of that uses the word mathematicians -- YES! :-) ) Again, I could myself argue about why this special interpretation is simply wrong and cite lots of reasons. I dont care. Thats what I think about when I hear the song. S.T. https://youtube/watch?v=xwuBly4Pye4
