So I was walking in the school yesterday and as I passed through - TopicsExpress

So I was walking in the school yesterday and as I passed through the student center, I saw a banner hungup near the SCSU office saying ‘Free Palestine’ and was disturbed by this. Personally, I think that people should keep their political opinions about this issue to themselves and should not be posting banners like this around the school. The conflict is obviously highly controversial so I thought it would be common sense to keep opinions to ourselves since we go to a school with people of different cultures and religious beliefs. That way we respect each other and can go about our business peacefully and without any conflict. Regardless of this conflict or which side you are on, I think specific issues, especially controversial ones, should not be forced into people’s faces at the school. Quite honestly, I don’t want to be eating my lunch in SC having to stare at these banners because it is uncomfortable and offensive not just for me, but for others on the campus as well. Even if they are a minority, they paid to go to this school and deserve to feel comfortable there just like anyone else. Also, I am Armenian and we have dealt with a lot of animosity in our history but you don’t see me posting ‘Free Armenia’ all over the school. Yes we can all have an opinion about these things but I don’t need to shove that in you guys’ face at school, it is something I can discuss with close family and friends if theyd like to talk about it privately, for example. We are in Canada, this isn’t the middle east. I’m looking forward to school next week like a lot of you and I don’t want these controversial political viewpoints shoved in my face there. If Israel banners were posted saying ‘free Israel’ they would be ripped down immediately by someone, although ideally none of this goes up on the walls in the first place because it’s not doing us any good anyway. Also, in terms of representation, If Im a parent and I walk into the school, seeing banners like that would definitely make me think twice about sending my kid there. These things shouldnt be shoved down peoples throats in a place where they are trying to learn and somewhere where a lot of students enjoy spending their time. Simply put, there is no need for this nonsense at our school. There are topics like genocide which Im sure we can all agree is wrong, so posting banners about stopping genocide in different countries is fine, but when you start to delve into controversial topics like Israel-Palestine, its just going to cause a mess and we dont need any tension from this, we are stressed out enough with other things as it is..
