So I went on a field trip today to hear a survivor of the Holocaust speak, or so I thought. I got there and a woman came up to speak and talk about the book of the survivors story and showed us a 17 minute film that was talking about the book. Ok so that makes sense a little bit of advertising right? Wrong. The husband of this woman on stage who is the survivors son and the author of the book comes up on the stage and introduces himself and talks a little bit more about the book. Then finally Zhonna comes on, the survivor. She tries to take the mic and talk but the son immediately opens the floor up to questions. A kid asks a question and he gives her the mic, but she goes off on another tangent kinda so the son takes the microphone away from her and tries to reword it just to be interrupted by his wife who reads a passage out of the book like a teaser. This goes on for awhile and you can literally see Zhonna try to take the microphone to talk, but her son wont let her. In the end Zhonna got maybe 7 minutes of talk time and they forced her to play Fantasy Improptu by Chopin. I couldve listened to this woman all day but no, she kept getting interrupted by readings from this book. This whole thing was nothing more than a book tour honestly and that just saddens me whole heartedly. What kind of a world do we live in where making money is so important that we have to deny others the right to tell their story? I highly encourage anyone who is interested in getting Hiding in the Spotlight by Greg Dawson not to. I am supremely disappointed by this man.
