So Im seeing all of these OL statuses.. and of course I am SO excited for all of the new OLs… a MAJOR congrats! I, however, distinctly remember crying for the majority of thanksgiving break on not getting selected, and then remembered being extremely down on myself for almost a month after that. So I felt compelled to write something for those that didnt get it. If any of you know anyone who didnt get OL and is super down on himself/herself, please, please please, have them message me. Its the why you want to be an OL that helps you feel better about not getting it. The biggest perk of OL to me was always the massive opportunity to serve in the year following orientation. Just the sheer amount of freshmen that might now reach out to you with their problems… its just undeniably one of the best ways to help others. And once I realized that was what I wanted the most from OL…to help freshmen in a personal way, THATS when I decided to be an RA, which was one of two of the best experiences of my college career. Being intentional is how you make the most of your college experience. So please, if you have any discouraged Hokies that put their heart and soul into OL but didnt get it, please just tell them to message me, or write down WHY they wanted to be an OL. What is at the core of their desire for that position? That answer will often help lead them to ways to fulfill that desire in their heart in a different way. After all, we each have extraordinary gifts, its just a matter of finding a place to apply them so as to help others the most.
