So. Ive been researching the history of rap etc, spoken word, Performance Poetry. Many say I was the first Performance Poet. Ive always thought of that as not referring to the first to perform poetry - but a term referring to a specific way of going about it practiced first by me and then briefly Patti Smith, then a few others before it devolved into Performance Art & Spoken Word. The few early Performance Poets were defined by a certain energy and glamor, style. Best I can tell, Im more like the first white performer of poetry... a kind of Elvis: like the way there became something everyone agrees is Rock & Roll that was actually a form of black R. & B.
