So Ive been seeing this article a lot lately and wanted to share my opinion on it, obviously youre free to disagree. This article does have some good points, women are the oppressed group and we shouldnt forget that. But I dont think Emmas speech was at all Well men, youre the oppressed group. Otherwise wouldnt it have been she for him? And she identifies herself as a feminist, clearly for gender equality, but also realizing that it is women who are oppressed and its men who benefit from gender inequality. But its also not that simple as she points out; there are gender stereotypes that do hinder men. Thats just the truth, and that we all benefit from gender equality is the truth. I want to ask so then what should she have said: men dont say anything because youre not invited into this discussion at all because youre a man. She emphasized that it is women who are oppressed, but was just pointing out the gender stereotypes men face as well, which to me is feminism. Yes, there was a lack of intersectionlity. As a privileged woman, I have learned (and am still learning) thet complexity of intersectionality, and I am hoping that Emma will do so as well. This is just the beginning hopefully. Yes women have always invited men to be part of ending gender equality, but Emma has a lot of people who know her, and more importantly many young women who look up to her, so I dont see the issue of her just pointing out again that men have to realize that women are oppressed and to fight with us. Ms. Watson, like all of us, is learning. Lets teach her more about insterctionaliy and I am sure she will listen.
