So Ive been thinking about this for a while, and I guess this is as good a place as any to post it. Im currently a grad student in atmospheric science, but Id like to do some language revitalization work in LA for maybe a year or so before I move on to greener pastures. I should be done with grad school around this summer. In particular, Id like to develop some language-learning software based on existing dictionaries, phrasebooks, and other materials. Software development is pretty different from the programming I usually do, but Im proficient in C++, and I have some amateur experience with XML/SQL. I also have some informal understanding of linguistics, and I can read IPA. There are a few things I want to implement aside from the usual rote memorization: dynamic dialect selection (so someone from Calcasieu would learn from a different vocabulary/pronunciation set than someone from Lafourche, and gradually expose learners to other regions), grammar visualization (something Rosetta Stone cant really do), and including stories and passages with a grammar/vocabulary helper markup. If we really want to get ambitious, Id also like to put spelling/alphabet reform on the menu. I would need someone who can write GUIs and any volunteers for audio/visual files. Alas, I also need money. I could work on this on the side, but it would take forever, and I want to get back to atmospheric science in a reasonable timeframe. If anyone knows of grants, etc., it would be very helpful.
