So Ive decided to copy two comments I put up to someone not understanding why Robin Williams (allegedly) killed himself: ============================== First/Initial Comment: Apparently, he was suffering from severe depression. Anyone who has endured and lived from it will tell you that severe depression often narrows your point of view to the point you cant (metaphorically) see whats in front of you. Its a mental pain that can be considered a hereditary disease. Often times, suicide is the only viable solution to the situation. The mentality behind it is: Im suffering so much, I want this pain to end in the only way possible. This mentality is typically common, if not deluded by the narrow perspective. While suicide is never the correct option, it is often the easiest. Getting help and getting people to understand are infinitely harder than taking your own life. While I do speak from experience, I would never condone and encourage someone to pursue this course of action. Robin Williams was loved and adored by so many, but his depression was what killed him, not the suicide. ============================== Second comment in reply to many thanks and to help raise general awareness: Youre very welcome. I know theres no amount of words that will ever change this, but the least I can do is help those who either need the help or those who dont understand, understand. Theres a powerful message behind this so for people who dont see it I will put it plainly: Depression is a disease that can twist and distort even the best and happiest of people into monsters and inhumane individuals. Depression can be overcome with time and determination and help from others, but it needs to be a help the individual wants. Forcing help makes it worse, not better. So to all of you who know the pain and feeling of depression please help those who are currently suffering by being there, listen to them, show them that you care. Sometimes, all it takes is a stranger to make someone get over their depression. When you can show someone that you, as a stranger, truly care about someone, it builds self-esteem and thats what the victim needs most. For those of you who going through depression now: Remember, suicide is never the answer, its a permanent solution to a temporary problem. While it may be the easiest fix, it is also the most damaging. If you feel it is getting out of hand, do not be afraid to ask for help. And for those of you who dont know the pain at all, here is my advice: Depression isnt a sickness you just wake up from and feel better. It requires determination and commitment. Its not something you can simply shake off. There is no cure and while you may help someone feel better, theyre still likely to relapse. Never patronize and talk down to someone who is going through it. Small and simple suggestions create huge impacts. Everyone needs to understand that suicide is 100% preventable and that its up to you to help make that change with someone.
