So Ive just got done running the 1st session of the Starter Set - TopicsExpress

So Ive just got done running the 1st session of the Starter Set for Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition for my group which includes Alex Mordue, Iain Galloway, David Dolliver and Andrew Seales. We had fun but I have to wonder exactly who this set is for. There is little to no advice on GMing and the set is severely lacking in wow factor. If I was a first time roleplayer I think I would be really disappointed by what is in there. Here are the things that I have caught so far that seem a bit rubbish: Only 1 set of polyhedrals feels really tight, even a d20 per player would be better. No crib sheet for fights, lots of having to go back an forth through the book to look at monster stats. No sheet to record spells on either. It would be nice to have some handouts or colour maps of the area to have in the middle of the table. I really think the character sheets could do with a bit of here is what you think about this other party member on them, something to guide you as a new player in a group dynamic. The adventure could do more to tie it to the characters. For instance at one point you have a trap spot thing happen and it happens automatically if any characters passive perception is above 15. Except none of the pregens are above that so why not just say they need to be looking for traps. I get that you might want to use this scenario with other starting characters but I think it would have been better to tie advice on rolls really tightly to the pregens included. We are going to work our way through this boxset and see how things play out but at the moment I really wish it cost a little more and was a lot more attractive. dnd.wizards/products/tabletop-games/rpg-products/rpg_starterset
