So Ive mentally run over Joshuas back story in my head many times and it doesnt feel right the original way I first thought it up, which was Joshuas mother was the woman driving the car who was Wicker on the run from other Wickers and/or werewolves when Joshua was a toddler. So I considering making mother a random woman that the Prince gets pregnant, and he knows about Joshua. Then the Wickers kill his mom, steals him and the car and runs. This makes the Prince kind of a jerk in that knew about Joshua but didnt bring him into the protection of the pack and a bit of a horn dog since he KNOWS the Wolf King is going to arrange a marriage for him. I didnt really want that for the two boys father. Then I thought about doing it this way. The Wolf King sets up a marriage to Joshuas mom. Wickers suddenly kill the mom and take toddler Joshua. The wolves look for Joshua, cant find him, and the Prince is in grieving. The Wolf King, however, contacts the Prince and goes Youre getting married again, your bride is on the way. And six months after death of first wife, the Prince is forced into a second marriage. It still makes Joshua and Seth half-brothers but theyre legally equal since theyre both from wives of the Prince. It would also make the Princes anger at having to send Seth to New York City just before the massacre make more sense. Hes lost his first son from his first wife. Now the Wolf King is taking his second son from his second wife. It would also erase all question about Joshuas last name. He was born with the Tatterskein name. Its not like his birth certificate, if they could track it down, would say something else. What it does, however, is eliminate the possibility that Joshua has odd witch siblings/cousins and some weird witch abilities he never realized that he didnt have. But I think Im okay with that. The witch bloodlines is a holdover from attempting to do a similar set up with a character who was obviously witch blooded who turned out to be Seths half brother. It worked for that character because they had all sorts of witch abilities that they were well aware of having and remember having a mom that could do magic. It doesnt work with Joshua who has no memory of mom and isnt aware of anything special about him before the shit hits the fan.
