So, Ive now officially seen Catching Fire. My girlfriend asked, How was the movie? and I said...GOOD. She said, Uh oh. Let me clarify. If I was judging it solely on its merits as a film, it was amazing. The acting was great, the special effects were gorgeous, the pacing was often heart-pounding (even though I knew the end results) and the scenery was spectacular, the soundtrack was great, dialog was good and I both laughed and cried. All the things that make this a great movie are there. Never mind that its a sequel, its a great film for anyone to watch, even if you havent read the books (but far less confusing if you have at least seen the first movie). But I read the books. And I feel the same way I did about the first movie. It was a great adaptation. Fantastic. However, while some of the cutting, condensing and minor adjustments to story felt reasonable and worked just fine (especially given the construct that Francis Lawrence had to consider, since he had the decisions of Gary Ross to honor, for instance, the elimination of Madge as a character), there are definitely things I felt might have missed the mark. Time will tell. Only once I see Mockingjay, parts 1 and 2, will I know if they fell short. Ill reserve full and final judgment for the time when Ive seen all 4 films together. Will I buy the DVD? Yes. Would I see it in the theater again if I thought I could get away with it? Yes. Id even pay to see it in IMAX. Would I recommend it to others? Yes. Do I think the people who were disappointed in the last one because of what they cut from the book will feel the same with this? Yes. Do I think the people on Team Gale will be happy? Yes. Do I think the people on Team Peeta will be annoyed or worried? Yes. Dont get me wrong; I believe that Josh and Jen did a wonderful job at the end of helping the story along to the conclusion. But they werent given enough material. And that worries me.
