So, I’ve mentioned before what a pain it is to give Lucie her heartworm pill every month. It’s chewable but she won’t chew it. She’s a master of spitting it out if I try to “throw it” down her throat, hold her mouth shut, and rub her neck. If I put it in a Pill Pocket treat she’ll eat the treat and spit out the pill. So I chop it up, cover the pieces in peanut butter, toss one in her mouth with one hand and smear peanut butter on her lips with the other hand so she’ll lick her lips and swallow the pill…..then repeat 3 times. (The pill is HUGE.) Afterwards we’re both covered in peanut butter. For some time now, my mom has been trying to get me to give Lucie her pill in braunschweiger and assured me that “She will gobble it right up!” I kept telling her that Lucie never “gobbles” anything. She takes tiny bites and even holds them in her mouth for a few seconds before chewing them carefully. But today, I just couldn’t face the peanut butter nightmare. So I caved and gave her the pill pieces wrapped in braunschweiger. Later I called my mom and said, “I owe you an apology. Lucie took her pill just fine with the braunschweiger. “ …..Fast Forward to this evening….. Two piles of braunschweiger puke on the carpet in the family room and a third on the tile in the kitchen. :(
