So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they seemed to him but a few days because of the love he had for her. - Genesis 29:20 (ESV) Aww, what a sweet verse. I saw it recently tweeted by godly dating and I thought to myself, self - isnt it odd to lift up Jacob as something to aspire to when it comes to dating? I mean Jacob did have children through four different women. Not to mention that even if this indicates a romantic edge to him you still have to deal with the rest of the package too. The lying and deceitfulness. The cheating his brother out of everything. The only reason he even met Rachel was he was running for his life from his brother. He also then cheated Rachels father out of wealth. We need to stop confirming this over-romanticized, fleshly, world driven version of love the enemy sells. A man loves a woman like Christ loves the church, not like Jacob loved one of the four mothers of his children. Yes Jacob loved Rachel but he also compromised all of the time. The sad thing is we continually teach young women that compromise is OK as long as its bathed in this worldly definition of love. We do them a disservice by lowering the bar and teaching them that goose bumps are more important than biblical truth and cupid is more important than Christ. #justsayin
