So, Komal Agrawal and Ritvik Shekhar tagged me to list down those Ten Books that have stayed with me over the years. So here it is: 1) Reach for the Sky: Remember reading about this pilot (in some magazine) who had no legs and became fascinated with his story. Hunted for his biography in many bookstores in pre-flipkart days and finally found it. The story of a man who becomes a pilot, loses his legs, re-applies and gets in during second world war, and goes on to play a crucial role in Battle of Britain and eventually leads the victory flypast. Douglas Bader. 2) The Testament/Tell me Your Dreams - Two very different books, two very different authors. But hold the same importance for me. Remember reading these on my first 30+ hours train journey to Vellore, the place which was to become more than my home for next 4 years. 3) The Godfather - Words can never do justice to any description of this book. It has its place alongside one of the epics. The ultimate story of the underdog, loyalty, good guy crossing over to the dark side, and what not! 4) Indias Struggle for Independence - OK, so I agree that this one is probably in the list because of recency effect. But, this was my first proper history book. Got me hooked to reading more and more about history. And more importantly for the first time, introduced me to freedom fighters beyond Gandhi and Bhagat Singh - viz. people like Master Da Surya Sen whose story fascinates me till this day 5) Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix - Now everybody has their own favorite Harry Potter book, some say Sorcerors Stone is the best, because it introduced us to the world of Hogwarts, others rate Prisoner of Azkaban for its face paced story telling. But for me, Order of Phoenix remains the best book of the series. 6) Patriot Games - I use Patriot Games as a proxy for all of Jack Ryan universe books that Tom Clancy wrote. 7) 1984 - the power of ideas expressed in this book is so strong that they remain relevant even more than 65 years after it was written. 8) Exodus - West Asia and its history has always excited me. And while some may call Exodus a biased story, it is an interesting story nonetheless. 9) Kane & Abel - Just Because nobody tells a story better than Jeffery Archer. 10) A Brief History of Time - A book that I couldnt understand fully when I read it, but hope to someday. i further tag Niyanta Datta, Arijeet Thakurta and Parvati Ramchandran to list down Ten Books similarly
