So....OCULUS. Definitely had its moments, nice creep factor, liked the evil mirror trapping everyone it kills vibe. But...the ending. The ending. *SPOILER ALERT* I dont mind seeing protagonists fail. Lord knows, in my writing so far, weve seen that, because thats true to life: unfortunately, we often make bad, bad, stupid choices, and we suffer because of those choices. As Stephen King has been quoted saying: We have monsters inside all of us, and all too often, those monsters win. *SPOILER!!!* But the whole: the mirror warps reality so you really have no idea whats happening and therefore no chance so youre screwed pal just feels like a cheat. Maybe Im too picky. Maybe Im splitting hairs. Maybe Im too rooted in an old fashioned, out-dated sensibility. But if the protagonists are gonna lose? At least give them a fighting chance of SOME KIND. They were screwed soon as the sister brought the mirror home. And hey - good reason for her to die. She was stupid to think she could outsmart it. But the brother gets hauled off and blamed again, through no fault of his own? Eh. I dunno. Come to think of it, Ive probably done the same thing in my fiction. I just felt that having reality warped so badly that they had no chance seemed sketchy. Anyway. Moving on...
