So.... Scotland rejects independence, and interestingly enough, the vote was somewhere in the middle of the results of the Quebec 1980 and 1995 referendums. 55% No and 45% Yes The reason that this is of note, is because Alex Salmond (the figure at the head of the YES campaign), extensively studied both Canadian experiences, in an effort to avoid the same mistakes made by the Parti Quebecois governments (he ESPECIALLY wanted to avoid the ethnic nationalism accusations that the PQ faced due to Jacques Parizeaus money and the ethnic vote comments). You will notice also, that unlike the PQ referendum (either one), in Scotland, Salmond made a concerted effort to avoid long and confusing questions. He largely succeeded, as many would agree, regardless of their yes or No stance, the referendum was a remarkably dignified and democratic experience with no bloodshed. The only thing that stood in Salmonds way was the fact that a majority of Scotts did not wish to be sovereign at this time. Was it that the 55% succumbed to the fear tactics that Westminster decided to employ? Or was it just that they thought it wasnt a good idea at the moment?
