Given that this is a center grip shield, even a cut as deep as this wouldnt have hit the shield bearer. The rim of the boss does a good job of shielding the grip. Moreover, many of the prior hits that bit into the shield but didnt find the grain took 3-5 seconds of work to wrench the sword loose. Against an uncooperative opponent busy doing his best to sink his own sword into you, I fear recovery would have been harrowing or even untenable. So yeah, shields arent indestructible. And they work even better bc they are not.
