So... The Judge... man this could have been a wonderful film. Instead it was a sentimental paint by numbers family drama. Like the movie Warrior from a few years ago it was led by the gimmick of pitting family members against one another... in Warrior it was two MMA fighters who were estranged brothers, in this it was a father/son, judge/lawyer duo. It was a glossy version of a movie David ORussell should have made... If David ORussell was behind the film it would have easily been a masterpiece much like his finest film to date: The Fighter. In fact if this was his film it would have been his fourth year in a row of being nominated for Best Picture. Instead it was David Dobkin, who should stick to shitty comedies instead of trying to branch out into shitty dramas that had potential without him. It makes me so mad that this movie could have been so good. All the actors were really busting there asses and it was clear there wasnt a worthwhile director guiding them. Robert Duvall was nominated for best supporting actor... he did nothing we havent seen him do but he still did some really honest work. He had a lot of areas he had to delve into to portray this character (that seemed to actually have TOO many issues... issues enough for three or four tough father stock characters). Robert Downey Jr. did some fine work... he played a similar role in a little known film called A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints. Robert Downey Jr. really needs the proper vehicle to get out his daddy issues... or at least one where he can accurately put all the things hes contenting with to good use. This wasnt it. I cant wait for him to find the right movie... when the planets truly align he is going to find a role, a director and the inspiration to create something truly powerful. Anyhow... The Judge... come from Jr. stay for Duvall... then realize theyve both been in far superior films and watch those instead.
