So. This morning, on my way to work, I saw a vehicle drive rapidly away from the edge of a field, and moments later saw a smallish dog as I went past. I wasnt able to stop then - and I dont know if the other vehicle was dumping the dog, or if the driver was unsuccessful at catching it and gave up - so I kept a close eye out on my way home. Sure enough, the little dog was still there, roaming around a store yard. As I pulled off to the side of the road, a man charged out of the store and drove the dog off - right into oncoming traffic. The dog was lucky enough to escape being hit, as drivers braked and dodged, but it was close. I was able to coax the dog over to me. She is a (roughly) 1 year old Spaniel mix type, weighing around 25-30 pounds, white with lemon patches. She is also in full-blown heat. Shes friendly, eager to please, and has amazing ice-blue eyes (no, she is neither blind nor deaf). Shes also got quite a few ticks. I DO NOT have the room or the wherewithal to keep her. As you all know, Ive had to beg and plead repeatedly to take care of the kids Ive already got...and that fundraiser still isnt filled (although its a LOT closer than it was!). My local animal shelter is currently closed, and all of the good rescues are in the same boat Im in. Ive sent a message to the director of one of the local Humane Societies, but I know theyre probably full as well...which is probably why I havent heard back from them yet. I am facing a tough choice. This little girl is highly adoptable. Shes adorable, young, and would make a wonderful companion. But I simply can not keep her here. Its not a question of want - or shed stay - its a simple question of logistics. As harsh as it may sound to some, if I cant find her a safe place to land by this weekend, I will take her to my vet to be put to sleep. And before a bunch of people slam for murdering a wonderful dog, let me remind you that I have seen the way animals are euthanized in shelters in my area. It isnt pretty, it isnt gentle, and there is no dignity in it. At least if I take this responsibility on myself, she will pass gently and with love...taking yet another piece of my heart with her. So if you, or someone you know, can help this little girl find a place to stay, please send me a private message, or an email to faulknerdownsrescue@gmail I dont have a photo yet, but Ill try to get one tomorrow, in the daylight.
