So... Today I was driving in town to go get a money order.. Well, this elderly man and woman evidentially not mindful of 12 pm traffic on a 4 lane highway decide to cross the road. The man took off across and the woman slowly was following... I watched this ... While several people keep driving past- and literally almost run over her- while I slammed on my brakes and hoped the woman would stop. She did and backed up in between the four lanes- with cars whizzing behind her and now me blocking off traffic from one of the two lanes - I tried to then park in-between the two lanes- without getting hit to block traffic because no one could see her except me and the woman behind me- so I was the only one able to actually help. I sit there for a min trying to decide what to do - put my vehicle in park- turned on my emergency flashers and decided to get out of my vehicle to help her across the street- PETRIFIED that she couldnt hear me screaming to wait. Anyway- the woman right behind me watching the whole thing and seeing this pulls up beside me to help me block off traffic. She then Parks and waits - I tell the elderly woman to cross the street and the older man says thank you and God bless you... To anyone that knows me I am usually busy going from one place to the next with no breaks - I honestly dont pay nearly enough attention to what people need generally and I hate to say it about myself but- I am one of those people that could be labeled as being too busy to be bothered - not that I wont help people but, I have to consciously put in the effort to notice. After helping with this its almost like I realize how horribly self-absorbed I am and how individualistic Americans are in general ... Helping someone might take 10 min out or your day but- it can save their life! LITERALLY. New goal = notice other people who NEED help. Dont just be so focused on my own life that Im too busy for others.
