So Todd Stone comes startlingly close to being honest near the bottom of this story. When he says that the reason for not being able to bring BC Ferries back under direct government control is that the Province could then no longer balance its budget, hes effectively admitting that the quasi-privatization of the Ferry Corp in 2003 was nothing more than a shell game - one that enabled the government to appear to be fiscally responsible while at the same time removing all BC Ferries debt from their books. A shell game that resulted directly in rising fares, dramatic cuts to services and the gradual but inevitable crippling of coastal economies. But heres the important thing. It *was* a shell game. The budget that the Liberals were so proud of was never really balanced. Removing costs for vital transportation infrastructure from the provincial budget and then calling it balanced is a farce. And Im sorry Todd, but until your government actually admits thats what happened, and that a government is actually responsible for administering the public services required by its citizens, then no amount of bluffing or posturing is going to allow you to talk your way out of this one.
