So, Tom Petty just sued Sam Smith over copyright infringement. This happens every few years in the music industry and it always bugs me. I like both of these artists, but I gotta say Tom is being a little... (trifling? ...piddling? ...theres a better word here, I just cant put my finger on it). Anyway, Tom Parsimonious claims that Sams Stay With Me sounds too much like his I Wont Back Down (which was released 25 years prior). Well, I just happen to have both of these songs on my iTunes, and I can analyze music like a boss, so I thought Id draw my own conclusion. I WONT BACK DOWN: Key - G major Chord progression: Em, D, G (vi-V-I) Melody line in question: Wont back down, no Ill stand my ground Notes: E-D-B, G-A-B-A-G (La-So-Mi, Do-Re, Mi-Re-Do) STAY WITH ME: Key - C major Chord progression: Am7, F, C (vi⁷, IV, I) Melody line in question: Stay with me cause youre all I need Notes: A-G-E, C-D-E-D-C (La-So-Mi, Do-Re, Mi-Do-Do) Hmm...I guess Tom kind of has a case here, the melodies mirror up pretty closely considering the rhythms are also similar (though the chords differ), but I still think its frivolous. There are millions of songs written with only twelve notes and a handful of chord progressions that make sense in pop music. Of course songs are going to sound similar eventually. Whats sadder is that Tom Petty, a man with dozens of hit songs that still get airplay, won the lawsuit.
