So, Xerxes and I went up to Magic Mountain today to re-up for the year (amazing deal, 75 bucks per person gets you in all year). Just mobbed, as chilly as it was. And so as we boarded the parking lot bus for the main gate, we had to go all the way back just to find a place to stand. Seated directly in front of me was a gay teenaged couple. Looked to be maybe 16, arm in arm, hugging and kissing. I noticed them and when I mentioned it to Xerxes (who was right next me), he didnt even see them. That, Id say, is a very positive sign. I explained to my son that the reason it was notable to me was that 40 years ago, at their age, that would have been inconceivable. As the song goes, it is OK by me. As we got in line for the passes, directly behind us was an entirely different phenomenon. A short, mustachioed fellow missing a few of his lower teeth, maybe 45, wife and four, perhaps five daughters and he was holding court on the activity planned for later in the day--purchasing ammo at Walmart to go shooting at a range. He had been unable to find some necessary weaponry in his gun safe and so they had to go where guns were provided, but you had to bring your own bullets. I guess thats a quality white folks problem. At any rate, he was showing his kids the proper way to hold a pistol and Xerxes and I were giggling to ourselves. X said he thought the dude was showing off, trying to freak the line out with his firearm fetish deal, I said no, to him, he is comfortable in this setting, he feels safe and it isnt like anyone cares enough to say anything anyway. I know that gay kids can be gun fans too so they arent mutually exclusive, but the juxtaposition of the happy kissing couple and this fingers-as-gun pointing family against each other in the space of five minutes does say quite a bit about how socially spanning the USA is at the dawn of 2015.
