So, a Tennessee magistrate ruled that a child cannot be named “Messiah” because only one person has “‘earned’ that title, Jesus Christ.” The ruling violates the 1st Amendment to the United States Constitution regarding separation of Church and State and will be overturned on appeal. The Honorable? (has she “earned” that title) Lu Ann Ballew needs a remedial introduction to the Bible. The word “messiah” is the English translation of the Hebrew “moshiach,” which means “anointed” and was never a title. The ancient Hebrews consecrated people (kings, priests, prophets) and things (the Temple, its utensils, unleavened bread) by anointing them with holy oil (olive). The word “christ” is the English translation of the Greek “khristós,” which was the Greek translation of “moshiach.” The Hebrews even referred to non-Hebrew kings as messiah: King Cyrus the Great of Persia. The Hebrew word “moshiach” never meant “savior.”
