So a coworker just asserted that my haunt is a neat hobby. I had to quickly inform him that it, in fact, is not a hobby, it is a business and treat it as such. Much as I did my time with The Brothers Dimm. It is a business, its purpose is to make profit. It requires detail, attention and a great deal of effort. He cocked his head sideways like a dog as if he didnt seem to understand. He asked what was wrong with my income from my job here? I told him that nothing at all was wrong with that. I am simply pursuing other avenues of profit, which will prove useful to me and my family if our fantastic government decides a shut down is necessary again in the coming years. Does this business provide me a creative outlet that I desperately need in life? Yes, why the hell would I go into a side business,on top of my regular 40+ hour a week job, that didnt provide me with any joy? Enjoying what you do for a living is part of the allure of owning your own business, isnt it? I thought so. I have resented the hobby label for years. From the beginnings of The Brothers Dimm up to co-owning the haunt. Is it my primary source of income? No. Does that make it any less real a business? No. Does that mean that in 5 years it wont be a substantial source of income? No. My coworker maintained his confused stance and expression, so i decided I was unlikely to convince him that this thing is more than a hobby and I am ok with that really. I know what it is and what it means to me, it means that i will worry over it, that i will pour a good deal of myself into it, it means that I will get to truly reap the rewards of a job well done and unfailing dedication to its success. How he regards it is of little concern. It was just annoying. Lol. Rant over.
