So a few moments ago Andrew Revkin wrote me, saying that he had mentioned me on a post he wrote on NYT Dot Earth today. Ironically it was in relation to the USFWS Ivory Crush Design challenge :D Little did he know that I had created a petition earlier in the day protesting the challenge, which I sent his way so he knew that I didnt favor the use of the contraband in any form to create awareness. He was not only gracious about my difference of opinion but kind enough to add my perspective to the original post! Thank you Andy! I had a breakdown over this when I first came to know about at the Clinton Global Initiatives Elephant Commitment from an AZA rep, then National Geographic ran it by me, and today alone several people have sent me the link asking me where I landed on it. All I care about is a future for elephants in the wild, and if this was in their best interest I would support it, but it is not. I think anything poignant that needs to be said about this heinous blood trade can be done so without the use of ivory in any form (crushed or carved). If we cannot find a more effective way of addressing this issue than through this counter productive design challenge, then we as designers have failed. Design is about innovation. There is nothing innovative about using the very substance that is pushing entire families of African and Asiatic pachyderm to the brink of extinction to educate people about why one ought not to be using it. It does not make any sense to me.
