Moment in time: Jan. 8, 1642: Galileo Galilei dies under house arrest Galileo Galilei was getting up the Catholic Churchs nose even before he endorsed Copernicuss idea that the Earth orbits the sun, not the other way around as the Bible says. He dropped objects from the Leaning Tower of Pisa to show that the speed at which they fell was not proportional to their weight, debunking another Church-approved Aristotelian theory. Then he developed his own telescope and found proof for Copernicus in the heavens. In 1616, the Church ordered him to knock it off. And he did, until a friendlier pope urged him to publish his findings if he could do so in a neutral way. He could not, and published anyway. Hauled before the Inquisition and threatened with torture, he got off with house arrest, dying in Arcetri near Florence, aged 77. Pope John Paul II apologized in 1992 for the treatment of Galileo.
