So a few words if I may... about music and comedy. When I - TopicsExpress

So a few words if I may... about music and comedy. When I started promoting local music many years ago the immediate problem I ran into was that as far as the general public was concerned local bands did not even exist. All people were exposed to was what the radio fed them. The assumption always was local = inferior and thus I had to get real creative to get people to the shows. What people began to realize was that in many cases the local bands were as good as, if not way better than, most of the national bands they hear on the radio. Plus they have a lot more passion, the ticket to see them is WAY cheaper, and you can have a beer with them after the show. Win/win all around. Now in comedy I am seeing the same thing in regard to the talent of the local comics. The Big Fat Comedy Show was packed out last night. There was no seating room. My mics always have really good audiences as well and THEY KNOW how amazing and funny these comics are. This shouldnt be a difficult job. EVERYBODY LOVES MUSIC. And EVERYBODY LOVES COMEDY. Again the only issue is that with local comedians that many people just dont know who they are or how funny they are. They will quote famous comics on facebook, share videos from their favorite comedians, but then have no idea of the hilarious comics that are right in their own back yard. I dont even consider myself an open mic host. I consider myself a comedy host. Because my nights are for the comedy fans. The Seattle open mic system is broken. I said it. They have 30+ comics clamouring for a 2-3 minute stage spot and then they expect comics to work hard to bring people for that shit. Hell even I would not go out of my way to invite a bunch of people to watch me have three minutes stage time. So what you get is a bunch of comics performing for other comics. A self-defeating system where comics are fighting so hard to get a shot to open for somebody bigger and get real stage time. My model is to bypass the middleman and make the up and comers the stars. Because I get no complaints from the audience. Getting crowds in to see comedy is not hard when you have comedians actually performing decent sets. Headliners like Kiera Giordan, J Rock ComedyTour, and my features like Darrin Chase, and Robert Moore always get HUGE laughs from the audience. They LOVE these comics. And that is all I care about as the host. My purpose and goal is to get comedy fans into rooms to see great comics. To see comics they never even knew existed, even many of my opening comics like John Slaton, Nate Thomas, Chris Walter, some of the most HILARIOUS people you will see on stage. So I will be exposing you all to these great local comics. Thanks to the efforts of my friend Erik Johnson soon we will be releasing a pro highlight video from this last Big Fat Comedy Show and give you all a taste of what our local comedy scene is offering. That is all, and remember, you can get more bees with honey, but nobody really wants bees. So just be yourself. -- LB
