So a little Tuesday morning ramble for the scriptwriters and storytellers in the group - since we havent had much of the rambling discussions for a while... Advice often given to screenwriters starting out is to write what you know. In other words use your own experiences as the foundation for a story. Do you agree with this? What are the problems and benefits of doing it? What about these alternatives? write what you want to know, (in which case the story becomes an exploration of something or a storyworld or a character/psychology). write what youve FELT - in which the emotions feel true but they can be applied to situations or storyworlds that you dont personally know. Start with a feeling... START with what you know in which case your own experiences function as a springboard to something different. You creatively expand out from what you know... Any thoughts/comments? Any other suggestions? Finding or choosing what story to tell is much harder than how to actually write it. Ian
