So, a year and a half ago, my family visited the Field Museum. It was upon my return from the Human RIghts in Childbirth Summit and the tail end of my kiddos spring break. We purchased an annual membership even though we knew wouldnt be back because it was cheaper. For the past year and a half I have been receiving mail from them addressed to Mr. and Mrs. James Valeii. Every time I pull it out of the mail, I erupt in expletives over their inability to cease their archaicness outside of their exhibits and into their business office. For a year and a half I have been saying that I am going to write them and tell them how infuriating and outdated it is to erase a womans identity through addressing her as her husbands property. This morning, our children are off for the weekend and my partner and I sat eating a leisurely breakfast. He pulled out the latest installment from them and chuckled. He asked if I ever wrote them. I said, no... Ive never made time for that shit. He pulled out their donation form, raised his eyebrows and taunted me... and this is what happened over too much coffee and lots of laughter: I guess well file this under #iamnotavessel and maybe even #evilvaginamagic ;)
