So, after a pleasant bonding kinda day with my boy, I put him to bed finally and settle in to watch a movie. Im a half-hour into the film when Sean (who will be three years old the first week of June) toddles out of his room. Hes a little sweaty and has his sleepy-dazed face on. I ask him whats up, and he replies: Dad, my mind-eye hurts. He does this while rubbing his forehead, between his eyes. Now, weve been doing the mind-eye schtick from that episode of Adventure Time where Finn & Jake save the Party Bears since he could talk, so about a year and a half ago, maybe? Sean knows where the mind-eye is, but he doesnt know *what* it is or what its supposed to do. Its a funny father-son gag we do. I say: To truly party, one must put aside the things that are troubling and... and Sean covers his forehead and finishes the line with: ... open ones miiiiinnnd-eeyyyyyee as he takes his little hands away in a slow arc. I havent watched this film since 2003, and only started watching it now because Ive been thinking of editing an anthology with FROM BEYOND as its theme. And for those who dont know the film, or the H. P. Lovecraft story its loosely based on, FROM BEYOND is all about the stimulation of the pineal gland. It hurts, this stimulation, and has predictably horrific results. Mildly spooked, I immediately pause the film, close the computer, and get my boy up on my lap. Everything alright? I ask. Theres Sean pink stuff coming out of my mind-eye, Dad. Hes still sleepy and rubbing his eyes. In the film, when the machine that triggers the pineal mutation is activated, the room is bathed in pink and violet light, and all of the beasties revealed in that light are pink. I am actually pretty proud, even as Im watching the corners of the room and tossing off an old protective sigil now and again. Actually, Ima go burn some sage now, I think. Whats new with you guys?
