So, after finishing the film, I understand the critical responses. This film is no Drive (which for anyone who knows me is aware that Drive is one of, if not my favorite film). This film is deep however. The characters are a little hollow, but the imagery is amazing. The film was accused of being style over substance, but I think the narrative structure just threw off so many people. Its very surrealist in the vain of Refns earlier films Bronson and Valhalla Rising. The whole Imagery of heaven and hell, God and punishment is very well staged and represented visually. This film takes the antagonist and makes him the character we are most closely attached to which causes a moral ambiguity of sorts. Overall, I liked the film for its Wong Kar Wai-esque color palette, visual imagery in general, and its soundtrack (Cliff Martinez who scored Drive makes another awesome soundtrack). Id recommend it to film nerds, but say for the general public that its just way out there when compared to Drive. Id give it a 7/10 but thats being generous and because I liked what Refn was going for but unfortunately pulled off in a less than satisfying way, but I hold him to pretty high standards. And holy crap, I need a blog for this.
