So after my visit to GOSH Charity on Tuesday I visited the hospital. My heart always pounds when I go there and it is always emotional. Strangely, because it is the site of so many sad memories, I love the hospital because amongst those sad times there were some real moments of joy. That may sound odd, but I know others feel the same. As you approach the main entrance you can see straight away that the hospitals motto The Child First and Always is at its heart. The first thing you see on your left is a statue of Peter Pan holding Tinkerbell in his hand. Many people will know that Sir James Barrie, author of Peter Pan and a big supporter of the hospital, gave the rights to Peter Pan to the hospital as his legacy. This is a hugely generous gift that has made such a difference to the hospital. The main reception door has rainbow colours over it and inside the walls are decorated with artwork by the children depicting an underwater scene. It must be such a welcoming sight for nervous children and their parents. I visited the Chapel, a very special place, and as I looked at the Teddy Bear Choir which is home to Annas doll in amongst lots of other toys, I thought about all of the children whose parents I have come to know, with hope that they are now all together in a special place of beauty, willing us on to make every moment of our lives count. I know that some parents now live too far to visit very often so I hope you know that when I visit, I am visiting in memory of Anna but also in memory of so many others. I was overcome with emotion in the Chapel and one of the Chaplains sat and talked with me. We talked about Anna, about life as it is now, and it was so comforting. What a wonderful place. My reason for sharing this with you is to explain why this hospital means so much to me and why I want to fundraise for the great work they do. We are so lucky to have a hospital like this.
