So, after witnessing this incident on Friday with rapper Ray-J and the LAPD, and then seeing the news item the next morning and discovering that he’s somebody famous (never heard of Ray-J up till that point), I did a little curious investigating to see who he was. Brandy’s brother, blah, blah, blah, and Kanye’s rival, apparently, since he’d dated Kim Kardashian, and subsequently a hitmaker for his song (questionable label) “I Hit It First.” And the discovery of all this made me get a bit contemplative, as these things are wont to do. As a songwriter myself, the entire impetus of that wing of my creative medium is about composing something that deeply resonates to something in my life, and the hope and intention of writing something that stands the test of time, so that at some point in life perhaps someone else might feel its resonance enough to want to sing it too, and by doing so giving the song a second life, a third, maybe even a tenth (or in the case of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”, hundreds!), thus rendering the song a bit immortal. Never in my wildest could I imagine entertaining the notion of using songwriting as a way of wielding it as a weapon in a very public (not to mention juvenile, petty, and spoiled) war with a fellow juvenile. I just…..yeah, I’m definitely becoming old and crotchety, as I shake my head the entire time I type this.
