So, anyway, hello everyone. Facebook suggested this group to me as one I might like. While Im usually pretty doubtful of Facebook suggestions and I rarely check them out, they got this one right, I think. Im Catholic, and I play for our Saturday evening Masses. Im not the music director for the whole parish, nor do I select the music. The director spends a large amount of time carefully selecting a mix of older traditional hymns with actual meter markings (like 8.7.8.7) at the bottom, along with your basic Dan Schutte-style tunes - what can I say, but some people seem to like them. Our Saturday ensemble typically consists of myself on piano (electronic), 3 acoustic guitarists, a bass player, a drummer, a fiddle player, and about half a dozen singers (2 of us instrumentalists being counted among the singers as well). So youre giving me the squinty eyeball right about now and thinking, That sounds suspiciously like a pop band of some sort. Well, okay, yeah, it is, sort of. But ... Were not there to bang heads. Were not there to get happy-clappy. Were not there to get the house a-rockin. Were not even there to get the people on their feet. We are there to lead the congregation in worship through song, to ensure that they are engaged for the whole Mass and all it has to offer. If they do not sing with us, we have failed. If they cannot say afterwards that the music brought them closer to God at least in those moments (and not by way of nearly killing them with bad music), then we have failed. We bring a respectful take to some of the old classics with just enough of a different sound to catch your attention, and we do good work at turning some of the sows ears were given into silk purses, or reasonable facsimiles thereof. In short, while youd never confuse us with High Mass at Westminster Cathedral, you would also not confuse us with Billy Bobs Hootenanny Hoedown or a Green Day concert. Okay, now I sound like Im trying to social-media-hype my band, and Im not. Im just saying hi to everyone. So, hi.
