So apparently if you are a photojournalist it is acceptable and normal to take two people, dress one up as an Arab and pose them next to eachother, and one shouldnt call it fake. She argues The article reveals a lack of understanding of the difference between a faked photo, which misrepresents reality, and a photo illustration, which uses models and props to convey a concept. What is most fascinating is that Rosen then claims that the best real example of a fake photo is the ostensibly staged-managed toppling of the Saddam Hussein statue in 2003. In that case the military or someone had to find a winch to bring it down. So why was that fake but taking a Jewish boy and putting a khaffiyah on his head was staged? What was fake about the toppling of the statue? This is the classic case we see in journalism in which responsibility and moderation are always thrown out the window so people can not only defend themselves but also impugn others. Rosen could have just said that this illustrative photo was not captioned as being real and was clearly staged, and that it had symbolic value; rather than try to pretend somehow it is better than the Saddam toppling. Because in reality what is the difference? Why is it worse that Iwo Jima soldiers were asked to push up a flag hours after the battle, but it is always ok to put khaffiyahs and a yarmluke on the head of people? Only if incorrectly captioned is there a problem. And the photographers claim that it is not an offensive photo is problematic; putting a khaffiya on the head of a boy when no Palestinian children wear a khaffiya in that manner is offensive. It is as offensive as a Palestinian newspaper publishing a photo of an Arab kid dressed as a Jew wrapping Tefillin who is under age 13. I bet Jewish people would be annoyed about a fake Jewish child with Tefillin adorning a Palestinian newspaper. But for some reason it is always ok when it is the other way? haaretz/jewish-world/jewish-world-features/1.631615
