So, as happy as I am that the San Francisco Giants won their 3rd - TopicsExpress

So, as happy as I am that the San Francisco Giants won their 3rd series in 5 years... can we lay off the word dynasty? I really hate being a downer, and I know that the champagne afterglow of a Game 7 victory is the absolute worst time to whip out the dictionary, but... DYNASTY... noun, plural dynasties... 1. a sequence of rulers from the same family, stock, or group I think the key there is a sequence. The San Antonio Spurs won their first four chips in 99, 03, 05, and 07. Some people wanted to call that a dynasty and I called BS- I think to qualify, you need at least three titles in a short span, and at least once you need to defend your title back-to-back years. That early to mid-2000s Spurs dont qualify in my book. I think the early 2000s New England Patriots do- 2001 Super Bowl, then back-to-back in 2003 & 2004. Three titles in four years- with a title defense included. Even winning back-to-back doesnt qualify. Everyone gives Michael Jordans 1991-93 & 1996-98 Chicago Bulls the honor of being called dynasties. NOBODY, myself included, calls the back-to-back 1994 & 95 NBA Champion Houston Rockets a dynasty- and I absolutely love Hakeem Olajuwon. Part of me might feel comfortable calling Los Gigantes a dynasty if they actually did anything significant (win league/division or deep postseason run) in either of those odd-numbered years. But, sadly, I dont believe they qualified for the postseason in 2011 or 2013. The Miami Heat of recent years can at least claim themselves as a dynasty for winning the NBAs Eastern Conference (read: the sucky conference) four straight seasons from 2011-14, with titles sandwiched in between 2011 & 14. But very few people care to call that run by LeBron James & Co. a dynasty. It is often said that one of the hardest things to do in sports is repeat. I would argue that dynasty is the highest distinction and honor you could possibly give to any franchise to recognize success. I dont think a team deserves that type of recognition unless they successfully complete that hardest task of repeating at least once during the course of a dynasty run of titles. Thats not to say that what Giants did wasnt great. That what they did wasnt absolutely amazing and almost absolutely unheard of in this modern era of not just baseball, but all sports. Free agency alone makes winning multiple titles during a small window almost impossible in any sport. What the Giants did was, in my opinion: PRETTY F%^&ING AWESOME!!! Just not dynasty worthy... yet. Lets win another next season. And then Ill feel pretty damn comfortable throwing around dynasty when referring to this scrappy bunch. Really looking forward to 2015. Hope to see everyone at the yard. Go Giants! (Also important to note: the Los Angeles Dodgers suck.)
