So corset friends... you may have already heard about this consultation, but if not please do read and click through. Essentially, Snibston Fashion Collections are in potential danger. Due to cuts the council wish to reduce the scope of Snibston Discovery Museum and focus on mining history. Some of us would suggest that as Leicester owns one of the greatest antique corsetry collections in the world (Symingtons), they might consider focussing on that over than anything else... After all, how many tourist attractions in the UK already focus on coal mining? Its hardly great incentive to fly around the world or arrange a trip to Coalville... Properly presented and marketed, I do wonder if a dedicated corsetry/underpinnings museum might not be more successful? Its a shame that finances come into it at all really, because if money were no object then the rarity of such an extraordinary corsetry collection (and the local history behind it) would surely make it the more historically important thing to preserve. I know that whatever happens the council will do the best they can in hard circumstances.
