So, despite the PhDs of our presidents, ministers and government officials, the insignia of our military officers and our abundant wealth, recognition for sanctity of life and property of the average African remains a distant ideal lying comatose in the pages of our gospels and law books. It is today a pity to see how even the last line of defence – the military institution – has fallen victim to this descent. Commanding officers, according to the testimony of their soldiers, send ill-trained soldiers to the battlefield, poorly armed and scantly fed. In the face of a raid on civilians by the insurgents, the commanders do not raise their troops to the ideals of bravery, duty and sacrifice; instead, they “tell them to run away”.
