So disgusted now. I’m not saying there’s anywhere else I’d rather be conducting my life. I truly love this place. Where else in the world could I have an opportunity go to work for 30 years and do exactly what I love doing? Tomorrow, I’ll put on a costume and play Thomas Edison in a very serious scene, multiple times, about his enormous conflict with Tesla. And then, I’ll put on another costume and play Marco Polo in a 20 minute farcical scene for children about the historical Silk Road. Just last Friday, I put on a costume as Galileo and bared my (his?) soul about how passionate I am that technology and engineering is responsible for the architecture of musical instruments, and that mathematics is responsible for understanding the playing and composition of music, and that my (his?) father taught me these things which are more important than anything. I sometimes can’t believe that I get a regular paycheck for expressing my art in a science museum which, in its essence, is so rich and full of history and drama, and that I am so blessed and privileged. But things are bleak. I still think this is a great country with such a wonderful history of good deeds and accomplishments, and still a great potential to be so much greater. And the bad always happens to the good. Sorry, but it’s unavoidable. It’s just a fact. Human nature always provides conflict. Without it, theatre folk wouldn’t have a job, because conflict is the essence of compelling live theatre. Still, I am troubled and even a bit frightened. Really now. What’s going on?! Recent news reports profess the insane. There are rogue gangs of motorcyclists taking over our public roads and threatening families because they want to be on YouTube. There are ignored mental patients who, because of the lack of reasonable gun regulation and basic mental health care in the USA, are able to buy guns and slaughter people in the belief that they are a comic book superhero. There is a House of Representatives who would rather see the government of the United States of America destroyed rather than upholding the very law that they, themselves, passed with a majority, and that the Supreme Court of our great country upheld. There are so many more examples of such absurdities and atrocious behavior available. And what of the homeless? Where are they in all this? And don’t we know the current trend among some to attempt convincing the majority that the homeless are lazy – certainly NOT victims. HA! Perhaps the federal government should annex a sizeable part of Texas and create a new country for them called Screwyallvia. And also, how about the millions in this country who work full-time for slave wages, and so cannot meet even the most basic living expenses? That seems fair, doesn’t it? I can imagine another sizeable portion of Texas being dedicated to a new country for these folks called Gotyerballsia. And so, the rich get richer. Our plutocracy grows and prospers – for some. And the historic American Dream we’ve been so proud of? Right now, the American Dream is the lottery. That is much more than sad.
