So far Im extremely impressed by South Africas Kruger National Park: a fine example of ecotourism done right. The wildlife is spectacular (just today we spent time watching rhinos, elephants, giraffes, hippos, cheetahs, lions, and loads of interesting birds), and the park is superbly well set up for tourism. There are visitors here from all over the world, but the park certainly doesnt seem crowded, and the fees paid by these visitors are supporting the protection and management of this whole vast park. Early in the planning stages I got some essential advice from our friend Ethan Kistler, and with that foundation it was incredibly easy for me to make all the arrangements for accommodations and travel within Kruger. If a person had limited time and wanted to maximize their bird list, it would be wise to sign up for an organized tour. But for Kimberly and me, with a little more time and a willingness to cast around and explore, Kruger is incredibly well set up for independent travel.
