So, for those few of us here that actually on occasion EAT our chickens (yes, its true. My name is Cindy Lou and I eat chicken...) anyway, for those of us that have come to the place where we actually eat some of our extra roosters, which breeds have you had the most luck w/ getting the most meat from? Im not talking about broiler chickens, Im talking about extra roosters from your laying flock. Ive found Ameraucana to be pretty much not worth the effort. They just dont have much meat on them. My orpington boys, they are way better, but I dont seem to be able to pick the RIGHT age to send them to their dea (I mean take them to Muskrat Haven). They look huge, but I suppose it is mostly fluff. I dont know. Maybe because most of my roosters free range? Perhaps if I penned them and fattened them on corn for a while? Any comments/suggestions? What breeds to you recommend for dual purpose? I know there are several supposed dual purpose breeds, but I dont agree all are very GOOD all purpose. Great layers but eating? What say the Chicken Chatters? I guess I should add here - for those of you who have given me back their PET chickens - TRUE pet roosters, they are STILL IN MY PASTURE. I would as soon eat a tame pet chicken as I would the cat. The few roosters we ever process are nameless and wild as the wind - and nobodys pet. :)
