So gather around and let me spin ye a yarn. In April 2013 I was needing a job. I found a new shop, only open 6 months. But it was a SHOP. Brand new Mori Seiki machines, a 4 axis lathe with sub spindle and a mori 3 axis mill, and a new mazak 2 axis lathe. A brand new mori NT 5400 was on order and they were deepening the 8 thick slab to 32s deep. I was literally the first machinist hired there. So I had no where to go but up right? Thats what I thought too. There were days I was running 3 of the 4 machines. 18 hour days? Yup. Back at 5 am, sure. Called in on holidays, absolutely! We need more people in the shop? I actually filled it with qualified friends. Then it happens. They put an ad out online looking for a lead man. Wait, what? So I call my boss and ask him, WTF?!! he doesnt know. So I approach the owner. He actually tells me that I hadnt proven my self. Needless to say Im furious. So I found a job designing parts for the oil industry. When I went in and gave my notice the owner and my boss, the owner got mad. He said give me a minute and he took 5 REALLY deep breaths. He never went mad, but he got mad. Then we talked. He was dumbfounded. He couldnt believe I would leave. But when I told him I didnt know how I hadnt proven my self, and if all Ive done with and for this company to this point wasnt proof enough, but some new guy off the streets did have proof, then maybe it was time for me to move on. So I started my new job June 23. Didnt take long till my old boss was calling me asking me for help. They needed help on the machines cause there was a lot of jobs I had intimate knowledge of. Then they had machine issues and they were calling me asking how to fix it. (Nothing worth calling the machine maker about, just quick help. ) Then the owner text me telling me thanx for all the help. Then 2 Fridays ago the owner text me and said we need to get together. He was on vacation. Since I had a bunch of friends that I got jobs there and I was good friends with my boss, I knew what was going on there. The lead man they hired has 30 years experience. And scrapped everything he touched. My old boss was furious with the new lead guy. So I went and talked to the owner this past Friday. We talked. He wanted to know what I could do for him. I went to the white board he has and wrote down things the company needed when I was there, cause I was pretty sure they hadnt been implemented. And they werent. He wanted to go get the VP. I asked him why, he said he needed to hear this. I told him, When I was here last time I sat in his , the vp, office and told him this to his face, and he didnt do anything about it then. He said, Oh, I guess we dont need him then. And sat back down. After that he asked me to sit back down. Then he said he wanted me back. He offered me the position and backed the brinks truck up. This will be the most I have ever made in my career. But there was a catch. He needed me to start immediately. That freaked me out A LOT! The job I went to only worked 4 days a week, 10 hours a day. So I had Fridays off. Well... I worked this Friday, at my new old job. The owner was excited. My boss was on vacation and they called him to tell him I was back. I think he was crying he was so excited. He cant wait to get back from vacation. This morning I went to the owners house for a production meeting. And I couldnt be happier. I feel horrible I gotta burn a bridge like that. But they offered me a $16,000 a year raise. I was shocked, my head has been spinning all weekend. But I saw someone post know your worth on here. And hes right. Dont feel obligated to a company. You are expendable. Everybody is expendable. I knew I was worth more as a person. And fortunately for me, the company found out what I was worth. It took them finding that machinist that knew it all, but could do nothing all at the same time to figure out good employees arent a dime a dozen. Have a great evening.
