So guys over the weekend I successfully completed my first real engine rebuild. I did it once before in class on a brand new never driven or opened engine so to me that didnt really count because it wasnt going to run anyways and we couldnt run it to see how it did. I swapped this motor in 2 years ago in a huge pinch before i moved 900 miles up here to MA when my old motor blew a week before the move. I found one left in the U.S because a Tsunami that hit Japan had wiped out our sources of D series honda motors. These motors are suppose to come with 30-50k on them and since I got it the rings wernt sealing and nor were the valve seals. I only put about 20-30k on the motor since i put it in and wow this was definitely a high milage motor. The cylinders were smoth as glass. So I put in new supertech valve seals, Nippon racing head gasket, ARP head studs, Nippon racing piston rings, ALC connecting rod bearings, and ARP connecting rod bolts. I rehoned the cylinders which came out great, and spent over 6 hours cleaning the head and all the valves because the exhuast ports and exhaust valves were unbelivably built up with carbon. I got everything to look brand new or as close as you can get without having a mechine shop do a nice port and polish job on it. the same for the pistons, in one of the pictures off when i first pulled the head that they were pretty built up with carbon but i got them looking like they just came out of the box. The job mainly went off without a hitch other than the cam gear bolt snapping under 5 ftlbs of torque so luckly a left handed drill bit pulled it right out, and my ECT connector wires were so brittle they broke off at the connector so I just pulled the pins out of the connector and there was still enough wire left to soder new wires to them and heat shrink them and did the same to connecting it back to the engine harness and I have to say Im extremely proud, drove it almost 200 miles and not a drop of oil has been burned or lost. I do need to go back in though sooner than later and replace the crankshaft bearings because they were some nice hot spots on them so id like to do that before they take a spin( haha yes that pun was intended). Unfortunately I didnt get many pictures because I was to busy working but there are a few. Honestly if it wasnt for my buddy victor I dont think I wouldve ever gotton threw this over the weekend, he really stepped up and delts with the valve train after i took off the rocker arm assembly, he did a great job dissassembling and reassembling the valves and did an excellent job cleaning the valves for me while i took care of the bottom end of the engine. all in all im pretty ecstatic with how it came out, yes its still the same slow honda but it runs great and I did all the work to it, not some shop but me.
