So, here I am in New York, once again, looking at art. There is a lot of Chinese art for sale. In case you dont know, you can go online and watch the auctions (always the auctioneer) at christies and sothebys. Its like watching the grass grow (or paint dry). You can also do it for the big sales in November, when art sells for more than I will make in my lifetime (way more!). For me, I mostly look at what they can spend (lots!), without paying too much attention to questions of morality and ethics. After all, if you have $100 million, why shouldnt you spend it any way you choose? Particularly if buying a painting by Van Gogh (or Andy Warhol) makes you happy? But these prices do start to raise questions about equality of pay and the like. Should one person earn $1 billion per year, when the rest of us eke along on less than $100,000 per year? Tough question, and how do you resolve it? As a sidenote, I am now up to page 404 in Ayn Rands Atlas Shrugged. The book has turned into crap, but I am determined (at least, for now) to finish it. Nothing is real or realistic in what she proposes. Was the economy so bad in 1955-56 when she wrote this? I dont think so. So what was her motivation? Government regulation came about from the failure of business to do things right. Given the number of businesses that agree to pay multi-million dollar fines that are reported in the newspapers every week, it is hard to see where anything other than profit matters. And this includes lawsuit fees. Solutions, anyone?
