So here I was grumbling and fussing and cussing like a true Malveaux woman because on my birthday yesterday I was in Atlanta with our Board of directors presenting and working. I was also revising a document and shaping a budget for it, and getting very little sleep. And part of the Board activities was to talk them to Ebenezer Baptist Church, where some of my work takes place, in a collaboration with Ebenezer and several other nonprofit organizations and the department of families and children. We had lunch and spent time with the pastor, Rev Warnock, who the day before had been arrested for protesting at the State Assembly about the GA legislature and the govenor denying access to healt-care for 600,000 folks. Then we had a tour of the King memorial, where Coretta Scott King and Dr. Martin Luthier King, Jr. are buried. And at the outdoor part of the memorial a tape was played with excerpts of Dr. Kings speeches and the park service talking about different aspects of his life and journey. What a beautiful day and reminder of what riches a purpose-driven life can bring to this society we live in. While I was fussing and cussing and grumbling, I ended my day with thanks for all the blessing bestowed upon me. For my friends and family, many who reached out by phone, text, email, facebook to wish me well. For the talents and skills that Ive been blessed with, and for the opportunity to continue to do the kind of work that I love where I can use those talents to help do my bit. And I blessed because my burdens are light compared to many and most. I was reminded that life is so much bigger than me and my little ol birthday, but on my little ol birthday, I was reminded of how great life is, and how blessed I am. Thanks dear friends for your well wishes, and I hope that from time to time you have the same kind of moments that remind you of how special you are to live the life you live and to have the things and people in your life that bring you joy and allow you to be the special person that you are.
