So here is the official image of the World Meeting of Families to be held in Philadelphia in 2015. Its an icon of the Holy Family. Some people love it and some people hate it. I like that the Holy Family is not depicted as a kind of fairly tale, unapproachable. Mary is depicted as a simple woman, which I like. Baby Jesus has a belly and appears older than he seems. This is not at all uncommon in art. He, too, seems to be simple, which I like. Joseph seems to be grimacing? But there is dignity in him. And why is Joachim hidden in the background in the dark? The overall image is somewhat dark. Maybe this is symbolic of the dark times they lived in? Symbolic of the family in our own time? I am not sure how this comports with the theme of the WMF: Love Is Our Mission:The Family Fully Alive; Called together from all over the world in faithful celebration of the family—the sanctuary of love and life. But the attempt is noble and the theme is worth considering.
