So heres a very different sort of post than the boat photos youre accustomed to seeing from us at In the Mind of the Maker. Our film asks the question, Why is it so important to preserve the kind of skills demonstrated by traditional makers like our master boat builder, Edward Couvillier? Its not because we necessarily need wooden boats the way we once did. And its not about what he can do with his hands, really. Rather, its because of what he, and other artists and traditional craftsmen like him, can do with their *brains*. Creative people use mental images of all kinds, and if we can enhance our capacities for things like visualization and spatial thinking, then we can foster more makers among us-- more artists and artisans, more innovators and inventors, more architects and engineers, ultimately more industry and culture. Unlock the secrets to how the brain works among creative people, and what you get is more creative people. Heres a TED Talk from one of the scientists featured in our film, Dr. Sheryl Sorby. Shes dedicated her career to figuring out how to help underachieving students train their brains to do some of what our boat builder does, and to become better engineers. Its a bit long (14 minutes or so), but very informative. Please share! https://youtube/watch?v=cJZIhl28HFI&feature=youtu.be mindofthemaker.co/support
